Cells 4

Grade 8, now that most of you have started your Cell projects and are beginning to paint, I want you to start thinking about what your final painting will look like. Here are some examples of Cell art to get you imagining the possibilities some more...

Madonna con Clon, Dr. Hunter O'Reilly

For homework, and to get you thinking about the Science of it all, visit these two links: Cell City and Cells Alive! Be ready in class next week to ANSWER QUESTIONS about the homework.

Remember that Mr. Young is going to be looking for the following information in your final painting:
  1. Name: The Cell is accurately named and sourced
  2. What is it: Kingdom of life the Cell belongs to is identified. Where in the multi cellular organism it is found is identified. If it is unicellular, where the organism lives.
  3. What does it do and how: Explanation of how it performs its function
  4. What makes it a Cell: 5 features common to all cells are identified
  5. What makes it unique: 5 features unique to this Kingdom of cells or this specialized cell

Collage Portrait

Grade 6 while you have been waiting for the projector to trace your Fingerprint, many of you have completed your first Collage Portrait. Collage Portrait, as we are calling it, is when you cut paper shapes to create the elements of a person's face and then glue them onto a background. Here are the basic steps:

To start with choose a picture from a magazine. Keep the size to about an A4 sheet of paper. It is best if your picture is a simple facial portrait.

Next take a sheet of tracing paper and place it over the picture that you chose. Then find shapes in the image. The hair can be one shape, the eyes, nose and mouth their own shapes. Try to simplify the image by making each element into a shape that you can easily cut from paper.

When the shapes are all cut, glue them carefully to the A4 size background. Leave a small space between each shape and watch how the background colour helps to add line to your composition.

Tip. Do not glue right to the edges, it keeps the portrait paper clean AND the edges create fun shadows in the Collage Portrait.

Kapadokya Projects 2 - 702

Christ Pantocrator in the Dark Church

We talked in class on Tuesday about getting your Development Sketchbooks into order and up-to-date, so here is your homework for Friday, November 21:

  • In your DevSkbks you will write 2 entries for the Kapadokya Project assignment, Ceiling Fresco 1 and Ceiling Fresco 2.

Ceiling Fresco 1
:
  1. Write the date: 31 October 2008

Announcements Week 11 (17-23 Nov. 2008)

Grade 6
In class you are either tracing your Fingerprint OR working on the Collage Portrait. The Collage Portraits are beginning to look really good. The Fingerprints are also coming along and I am anxious to start painting with you.

Last week we did not go through the Development Sketchbook checklist that I gave to you, but we will this week, so make sure that you are ready to have your books checked by me on these days:

  1. 601 - Tuesday, Nov. 18
  2. 602 - Wednesday, Nov. 19
  3. 603 - Thursday, Nov. 20
Grade 7
The Kapadokya Projects are well established now and you need to record the process in your Dev. Skbks. We talked about this in class and agreed that at some point this week I would post a homework assignment for each group to write about their work. The assignment will be due for all the Grade 7 groups on Friday, Nov. 21.

Meanwhile, in class:
  1. 701 - Complete the transfer of your design onto the Grid Paper that I gave you so that you can proportion your work and plan realistically for the Collage Sketch of the Street Scene that you must also do this week.
  2. 702 - This week you start painting.
  3. 703 - You should have completed painting your Paper Pigeon and this week you will sew onto the paper for the final layer of detail.
Grade 8
Last week we spent a significant amount of time re-grouping to make sure that your Cell Research is recorded and clear in your Dev. Skbks. I am expecting to see everybody done with that portion of their work this week and all members of the class working on their final paintings.

Kapadokya Projects 1

Grade 7
The Kapadokya Projects are taking shape. We saw some good progress in developing ideas in the Fresco Group and the Pigeon Group.

7_01 Shadow Boxes
You know that I expect to see some real collaboration and progress this week. You have a lot of work to do to make up for the last two lessons where only Group 1. Skyline/Landscape were able to come together and be productive. The other two groups: Group 2. Göreme/Town/Churches and Group 3. Underground City have some serious research and brainstorming to do. If you do not get it together this week, we will have to re-group and seriously assess what to do.

7_02 Ceiling Painting/Fresco
The fresco quadrants are getting transferred in class using the projector. You have already completed half of the tiles and I think that this week you will complete the rest of them, that means that next week you will be able to start painting.

While waiting for the tiles to be transferred you have been assigned a Collage Portrait as a pre-cursor to your Self-Portrait that you will be completing after the Kapadokya Project is finished.

7_03 Pigeon House and Pigeons
This past week we made some great Paper Pigeons and many of you brought in a wealth of supplies for us to experiment with. As a group you have agreed to make a life-size Paper Pigeon first, embellish it by cutting feathers and adding details through sewing. Your second Pigeon is going to be a soft sculpture aka a Stuffed Pigeon. This week please we will concentrate on the Paper Pigeons.

Fingerprint 2

In class this week you completed a Contour Drawing of your Fingerprint in your Development Sketchbooks and then you chose a set of Complementary Colours (Red & Green, Blue & Orange, Yellow & Violet) and you tested how you might choose to paint your final fingerprint using those colours plus all the tints and shades.

This week I also fingerprinted each of you and scanned your prints so that we can project them onto the wall and you can trace a large copy for your final painting. The tracing takes time, and so we also started a Collage Portrait. While you are waiting for the projector you will work on various Creativity Challenges as well as the Collage Portrait. I will do a separate posting for the Collage Portrait when all of you have had a chance to see what it is about in class.

Grade 6
This week in class I will grade your Dev. SkBks. So make sure that the checklist that I gave to you is complete and that your books are in order.

Facebook for Art Class

Lacoste McDonagh's Facebook profile

As we know, checking Tetra Blink is not always a priority, for the Grade 8 in particular, and so, Zarina suggested that I create a Facebook Profile because you are all on Facebook most of the time anyway and that way you will get the notifications/updates on the blog delivered to you in the comfort of your own home.

What I have done:
I have created a profile as Lacoste McDonagh and then within that profile I have created a group called Tetra Blink - BUPS/BIS Middle School Art.

What you need to do:
Friend me (Lacoste McDonagh) so that I can then invite you to join the Tetra Blink - BUPS/BIS Middle School Art that is just for us. To friend me just click on the Facebook badge in this post or go to the badge in the sidebar under Announcements and click on that.

I think this should work, so... Thank you Z.

Announcements Week 9 (02 - 09 Nov, 2008)

Grade 6
You are all working on your Fingerprint drawing in your Development Sketchbooks. This week you will identify your print and and start planning your painting.

Grade 7
The Kapadokya Projects are taking shape, It seems that this week you sorted out most of the logistics of your projects (except for the Pigeons...) and now it is time to start working on them for real.

7_01 Shadow Boxes
Friday's class was tough, those last two periods are tricky, it is hard to come in at the end of the day at the end of the week and be all full of energy and ideas. I appreciate how quickly you agreed on your project idea and I think it is going to be a really good one. This week you need to sketch out the design for the project, make a list of materials and assign who is going to work on which Shadow Box: 1. Skyline/Landscape, 2. Göreme/Town/Churches, 3. Underground City.

7_02 Ceiling Painting/Fresco
The fresco has been mapped and each of you have been assigned your section of the grid to paint. If you have forgotten, you need to speak to Murat. This week you will be tracing your quadrant onto the ceiling panel. As a class you need to talk about colours and make a final list of your colour palette.

7_03 Pigeon House and Pigeons
We agreed that the Pigeon experiment was pretty funny and quite a disaster in terms of making models of Pigeons. You know that as a group you need to collect lots of pictures for references AND decide on the best method for making your Pigeons. That needs to happen this week!

Grade 8
Most of the background research is completed. You should have a detailed profile of your cell and a good understanding of it. Your stories are ready for the paintings and you have completed the Sketch Painting in your Development Sketchbooks. This week all that work needs to translate into you starting the actual painting.

Fingerprint 1

Grade 6 your are doing a Forensics unit in Science class and your next art project is going to be a large painting of one your own fingerprints. You will paint using only 2 complementary colours + the shades and tints of those colours.

In class we explored what a fingerprint is. Some of the words you used to define a fingerprint were: unique, pattern, identity, whorl, arch, loop, oil, trace, forensics, DNA, everybody has them and they are everywhere.

In your Development Sketchbooks you made a print of your Thumb and then attempted to draw a full page copy of it. While doing that you discovered just how much detail and information a fingerprint actually has in it and many of you complained that it was "too hard" or "too much", which made me laugh, because YES it is far more complicated than you first think and that is what is so cool about having fingerprints.

6th Grade Homework
In your Development Sketchbooks research the following vocabulary for fingerprints:

  1. Arch
  2. Loop
  3. Whorl
  4. Twinned Loop
  5. Composite.
For each word write a definition in your own words and draw an example fingerprint. The size of your drawings can be quite small but 3cm x 3cm should be the smallest. When writing your definitions just try to describe what you see in your own words, just like we did in class.

I have posted links in the links column under FINGERPRINTS, you will need to look at these to do your homework.

Announcements Week 8 (27 Oct -02 Nov, 2008)

Grade 6
This week you should be all caught up in your Development Sketchbooks and we are going to look at the Art in Forensic Science. Check out the Rob Gonsalves slide-show

Grade 7
The Grade 7 class keeps getting interrupted, hopefully this week we can really get to work on the Kapadokya Projects. Come with ideas!

Grade 8
Read Cells 3 and come to class with each of the steps listed in that post recorded and laid out in your Development Sketchbooks.

In your Development Sketchbooks you need to have the following for next class:

  1. Make sure your Cell is indeed a Cell...
  2. More images of your Cell (at LEAST 3)
  3. An explanation in your Development Sketchbook about where your cell can be found and what its function is.
  4. A story of your making that tells us where your cell is in your picture and what it is doing.
  5. Think about mixed-media techniques that you might like to employ.
  6. Be ready next week to come to class and start this painting.

Rob Gonsalves: Real to Surreal

Grade 6, here is the link to the Rob Gonsalves slide-show (click on his name) that I was showing you in art class. Enjoy! Thank you Bade for sharing this with us.

Cells 3

Your Cell Project is beginning to take some real shape in both Biology and Art class. Mr. Young has posted information for you on Moodle including a rubric clearly stating his expectations for the Science side of things.

I clarified for you in Art class this week what I expect you to be doing as you develop an idea for your painting. We have talked about understanding your Cell almost as if it were a personality and you have now pulled together its biography. Many of you have created a context for where to place your cell in a picture that will tell a "story" both factual and fictional about your chosen cell.

In your Development Sketchbooks you need to have the following for next class:
  1. Make sure your Cell is indeed a Cell...
  2. More images of your Cell (at LEAST 3) - you need to become as familiar with your cell, as if you were studying a person to paint their portrait.
  3. An explanation in your Development Sketchbook about where your cell can be found and what its function is.
  4. A story of your making that tells us where your cell is in your picture and what it is doing. Remember the examples that I shared using Erim's Goblet Cell and Laila's Strep Cell.
  5. Think about mixed-media techniques that you might like to employ. Some of you have already talked to me about paints, sewing, collage.
  6. Be ready next week to come to class and start this painting. You will complete a full sketch-painting in your Development Sketchbooks before you work on your final "canvas".

Urban Sketchers

Check out this link for Urban Sketchers.

"Urban Sketchers is a community of artists around the world who draw the people and places of the cities where they live and travel to. This blog is an extension to the Flickr
Urban Sketchers group started in November of 2007 by Seattle journalist and illustrator Gabi Campanario."

Announcements Week 7 (20-26 October, 2008)

Grade 6
This week you will be completing your Complementary Colour charts - and making sure that your Development Sketchbooks are up to date. Those of you in the class who are completely up-to-date will be helping the people who are not and explaining to them what they have missed.

Grade 7
I will handing back your Kapadokya Assignments. This week is full of interruptions because of testing and field-trips so our goal in class is to make sure of the following:

  1. Your Development Sketchbooks are up to date
  2. The Chalk Pastel Landscapes are completed
  3. Chalk Pastel Landscape is mounted
  4. Planning for the Cappadocia Class Project is started
Grade 8
This week in class you will complete a sketch-painting of your cell structure. Any adjustments made to your Cell Research need to be recorded in your Development Sketchbooks.

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Colour 2

Complementary Colours are the colours that are directly opposite each other on the Colour Wheel.

In art class this week you are going to make your own Complementary Colour chart for your Development Sketchbooks. While you are painting your chart you will probably notice how a colour and its complement seem to work very nicely side-by-side. You will also notice that the colours appear to be strong and might even feel like they vibrate when they are together. This is because when the two colours (red & green, blue & orange, yellow & purple) are together they seem brighter and more intense.

Your first painting assignment in Art this year is going to be a Complementary Colour painting. We will talk more about that in class. Right now you should note the colours in the painting called La Musique (Music) by Henri Matisse (1869-1964) ...

La Musique (1939)

Kapadokya 2

The Cappadocia trip is happening this week and while you are there you are going to be doing some independent work for art class. Please read the list below carefully and make sure that you see me before you go if you have any questions. I would like you to keep in mind all the fun facts/details that we have explored in art and to keep in mind the fascinating role that pigeons might have played in the monks lives.

When you get home you are going to take your observations and use them in your work.

Your art assignment is:

Day 1 (Wed. Oct 08 - Zelve Valley) or Day 3 (Fri. Oct 10 - Ihlara Valley)

  1. Complete an Architectural Sketch (x1) of either the Zelve Valley or the Ihlara Valley. Use your contour drawing skills and remember to sketch lightly first, then to go back after the initial sketch is completed and CHOOSE your lines. Fill your page. You know what I mean...
Day 2 (Thurs. Oct 09 - Göreme Open Air Museum)
  1. Make a list of the colours used in the frescoes and find out how the pigments for those colours were made.
  2. Sketch a detail of ONE (x1) of the frescoes in the churches. Pay attention to detail and use your contour drawing skills. Always use your contour drawing skills to lightly sketch out the details, use the full page and then go back and choose your lines, darken your details using line-work.
  3. Find and record (x3) symbols from the churches. If you can, find out what they mean and write the meaning underneath your sketch.
  4. There is church that has a chicken in it. Find the chicken/rooster/peacock (which is it?), draw it and discover its story.
Everyday
  1. Take photos of different Pigeon Houses and concentrate on interesting details. Come home with at least 3 photos.

Have a great trip. I look forward to seeing your sketches and photographs when you come home. Remember, your chaperones will have a copy of the list, and so will some of the students from 7_02.

Grade 7 Kapadokya Check List

Cells 2

How to set up your Cell Research in your Development Sketchbook
To start your cell research you will need to have the following elements in your Development Sketchbook. Remember to write everything in your own words.

  1. Write the date on the page (top-right-hand-corner).
  2. Give your page a title: Cell Research.
  3. Write an explanation of the assignment. For Example (do not copy this): We are studying cells in Biology and our first painting assignment in Art is to paint a large-format painting of a cell-structure. Ms. Lacoste has asked us to research three images of cell structure in our Development Sketchbooks. For the Art research we have to draw 2 of the cells twice, once just as a line drawing and the second time as a line drawing that we colour using Watercolour pencil. This assignment is to familiarize us with the structure of different cells as we learn about them and think about what our final painting will look like.
  4. Paste a minimum of 3 images into your books, label the type of cell they are and where you found the image, the source.
  5. Draw 2 of the cells two times. 1 line drawing + 1 Coloured for both cells = 4 sketches
  6. Create your own colour scheme for the cells you have drawn, do not copy the images you have downloaded, use them only as a reference.
  7. Remember to be creative in the way that you present your Research, use your pages well and think about the lay-out of your information. You want it to be interesting and fun to look at.

These images come from the work of David Goodsell who is a Molecular Biologist as well as an artist. I put them side-by-side so that you could compare the black and white line drawing to the coloured one.

Cells 1

In Biology you are going to be studying cells. As an off-shoot of that in art your first painting this year is going to be inspired by cells. I have asked you in class to look at images of different cells to start getting an idea what that painting could look like.

Here are some pictures to get you thinking. Over the next few weeks, Mr. Young and I will be clarifying for you exactly what this assignment should entail, but right now for me you are gathering ideas and putting them into your Development Sketchbooks.

I will be checking your progress this week.

Kapadokya 1

The week after the Bayram (09 -11 October) you as a Grade 7 class are going to be visiting Cappadocia. While you are there you will be sketching different things for art class (the list will come later). This week in class we talked about interesting facts about Cappadocia.

I have a made a list of keywords to jolt your memories and also put a series of links over on the right-hand column under the heading Cappdocia for you to check out.

  1. Cappadocia (meaning of the word)
  2. Volcanic Tuff
  3. Underground City
  4. Troglodyte
  5. Christian
  6. Roman Empire
  7. Monk
  8. Fresco
  9. Pigment
  10. Pigeon
Each one of these words is a clue to some fact about the history of Cappadocia and therefore an interesting connection to art and architecture. Click on the words for more information AND visit the links over there ➚.

Grade 6 this week you have started making your colour charts which you will use in future painting assignments. To complete this project you will be using the Primary colours (Yellow, Red, Blue) + Black and White. After talking in class you know that using these five colours you can create all the colours that you might need when painting + all their Tints and Shades.

Your colour chart will represent the following HUES: Yellow, Orange, Red, Violet, Blue, Green, their Shades and Tints, and you will also create a Grey Scale. This exercise will teach you how to mix your own colours successfully while getting to know the properties of the paints we are using in class. It will also show you how to determine Value (the lightness or darkness) and Intensity (the brightness or dullness) of a Hue.

Words that we talked about:

  1. Hue - in painting means pure colour
  2. Tint - is a Hue with White added to it (see above)
  3. Shade - is a Hue with Black added to it (see above)
  4. Value - the lightness or darkness of a colour
  5. Intensity - the brightness or dullness of a colour
I have posted some interesting links connected to colour over on the right-hand side of the blog under the heading Colour - go take a look at them.

Sketchbooks

This year the only supply that you will need to buy is your Development Sketchbook.

On occasion throughout the year you might be asked to go and shop for a particular specialty item when we are working on various projects, but you will not need paint, pencils, brushes or paper - those will be provided in the classroom for you.

Your sketchbook should be A4 in size and bound, not spiral. IF you are continuing with your Development Sketchbook from last year (Grade 7 and Grade 8) then you do not need to buy a book.

We will talk in class this week about the books and I will show you examples of the type of book you should be looking for.

Meanwhile check out this link to Dan Hillier's website. He is an artist who has some examples of his own sketchbooks and they are amazing. Make sure you scroll through the pages.
